Editorial Review for Chenez – by Jill Adler

The Scene
One of the most upscale restaurants in Summit County, Chenez prides itself on sophistication, evident in everything from the "no cell phones allowed" sign to attentive replenishment of warm bread. It's cozy and classy and, luckily, there are curtains to hide the tourists strolling along Marriott Town Plaza's concrete walkways outside.

The Food
For a French restaurant, there's a hefty menu, making the choice between eight appetizers, two soups and five salads difficult. French onion gratinee is to drool over, as are seared scallops glistening in garlic, lemon and butter sauce. For a bit of performance art, order the popular Chateaubriand, carved tableside and accompanied by a slightly sparse portion of tender veggies. Seared elk loin with sun-dried cherry and green peppercorn is served with a demi-glace that enhances the rich flavor of this non-gamey meat. Save room, and time, for dessert. The Godiva chocolate or Grand Marnier soufflé requires 30 minutes to prepare, but it's worth the wait.

Insider Tips

When to Go

After 8pm, the tables fill up and are closely spaced, inhibiting intimacy. Also, service may take a serious dive the more crowded it becomes.

Park It

Free parking underneath the Marriott Summit Watch hotel.

Beware the Atmosphere

For a ski town like Park City, the atmosphere oozes pretentiousness. Depending on your style, the intimate space--with its loud classical music--may feel a bit too stuffy for the common visitor.

The table water had a bad taste which I did not make a big deal of...but the owner noticed I tasted my S.O.'s water and asked if there was a probem. So I told him. "Zat is why we offer zee Pelegrino!!!!" Uh huh. That was after the hair (blond) in the langostines (tepid, although we were the only table), which I chose not to comment on until the meal was over, lest things become uncomfortable. I was told I couldn't have my elk medium (Simian that I am). Then water was poured, from a wine bottle, that was heavily laden with black sediment. Well, you'd think that would add some humility to the whole debacle. Nope: "Zat is why we offer zee Pelegrino!!!!" Hostess brings me new water and asks about it. It's fine. THAT'S EVIAN! (HA!). Bill was delivered to to my in-law after I had specificaly asked the owner for it to go to me. Couldn't wait to leave this restaurant that prdes itself on only having one seating. $733 for 4. We brought our own wine. Skip this charade and go to Chez Betty.

7/14/07 We decided to go to Park City this year to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary. We were concerned about whether Park City would have a nice enough (four to five start) restaurant to have a romantic dinner at. At the last minute we decided to try Chenez. We were completely caught off guard. Nestled in the shops off of main street was this incredible jewel of a restaurant. Not only was the food incredible, the service was perfect. It was as if we were dining in one of Paris' fine restaurants. The attention to detail was fabulous and the staff was extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine selections. We will make sure we dine at Chenez each time we visit Park City.

Pros: From A to Z

Cons: None
