Editorial Review for Goldener Hirsch – by Vanessa Chang
The Scene
Just off the lobby of the Goldener Hirsch Inn, the interior boasts woodwork and accessories evocative of an authentic Alpine retreat. Servers dressed in traditional Austrian garb perform duties thoroughly and thoughtfully. White walls enclose diners in an open dining area offset by a fireplace and doors to an outdoor patio.
The Food
Appetizers are plentiful and vary in flavor and texture. The green herb risotto is a stunning display of balanced seasonal flavors and a kitchen technique that produces creamy and savory shrimp-studded dishes. Timeless Austrian classics such as wiener schnitzel served with perfectly boiled potatoes share menu space with creative, international inspirations like the Asian-inspired roasted duck. Chef Jean-Louis Montecot's seasonal masterpiece of rack of lamb with oregano polenta, ratatouille and mint demi-glace is a definite must-try. It draws ardent foodies out to Deer Valley for a taste of pure culinary excellence.

Chef Montecot should be commended for putting together an excellent menu and executing it perfectly. I have a fantastic petite filet mignon, my wife a giant center cut pork chop. How he pulls off a grand marnier souffle at 8400 feet is a mystery. Add in competent and knowledgeable servers and we found it one of the best meals we have had in a long time.
Pros: Food, Service

We recently ate here on a summer evening, and rediscovered what may be the best restaurant in Utah. Apparently, the Hirsch brought on a fabulous new executive chef last fall who was trained at the best restaurants in New York and France and he turns out a very special evening up in Silver Lake. I saw the earlier review on this site, but from the date on it, it must have been written last summer, when I'm told they had a temporary chef not up to their usual standard, while awaiting the arrival of the permanent chef they have now. The food on our night was not just among the best in Utah, it was truly world class, and in a romantic, European setting. Definitely worth a special trip.
Pros: world class food, romantic setting
Cons: distance from SLC
