Editorial Review for El Chubasco – by Peter Behle

The Scene
It's not much to look at, located in the middle of a strip mall. But locals and informed tourists head here for a taste of real Mexican food at a bargain price. Order at the counter, then your meal will be quickly brought to your table.

The Food
All the standards (14 different combination plates) are here, but everything is a step above that of the typical Utah Mexican restaurant. If one of the daily specials includes mole, get it. Otherwise, go for anything with carne asada or carnitas. Soups are a specialty here, with the menudo and pozole both being exceptional. The pozole has a generous amount of meat to go along with the tender hominy.

We live here in Park City, and all our Salt Lake friends RAVE about the Blue & Red Iguana mexican joints in SLC, granted their decor is better, and have a colorful Utah history, but the food here is 10 times better. Yes, it is in a "strip mall" that we call the "Prospector Food Court with parking..." but you will not find a better carne asada, mole or camaron anywhere... excellent salsa bar with every taste available from sweet hot to scorching. This place is very clean, and very busy, staff has been helpful and good to our family, sad to hear some one else did not have good service, but the staff does not speak very good English and may cause some misunderstandings. Another good sign is that our local Mexican population eats here daily, and the more exotic Mexican offerings on the menu the better.... be daring and go beyond the taco or burrito specials. This is not "Baja Mex", or "Tex Mex", it is more central Mexican and very authentic, with an addictive taste... We have not eaten at any of our regular Mexican spots since El Chubasco came to town many years ago...

Pros: authentic central mexican food with exotic specials... staff is NOT fluent in English...(ha ha)

Cons: strip mall, staff is NOT fluent in English, not enough seats during rush

We recently moved here, and were pleasantly surprised by discovering how great the food is here. My problem came when I asked for corn tortillas (instead of flour) for my particular meal. The two ladies working the register rolled their eyes and grunted, grabbed my plate - almost spilling it over, then refused to give me eye contact thereafter. I actually volunteered to pay the price of another meal, just to let them understand I wasn't trying to be difficult (I'm allergic to wheat, therefore I can only eat corn tortillas, not flour). I'm an easy-going person, and didn't allow this to ruin my experience of great mexican food. However, this rude attitude coming from the women working the register (rolling eyes, grunts, and dismissive body language) became the norm each of the four times we ate there. (Although the men working always smiled, were very friendly and accommodating.) My family that joined us the last time we ate there, asked why we would eat in a place where we were treated with such disrespect. I didn't have an answer, nor have we returned. If you are treated well, eat there - the food is great. However, we are learning that there are plenty of great restaurants here that have great food and great attitudes.

Pros: authentic mexican food

Cons: horrible customer service
